Kamfen, çeşitli doğal ürünlerin yapısında bulunan bisiklik monoterpen olup; kafur, toksafen ve izobornil asetat gibi tat ve koku veren kimyasal maddelerin hazırlanmasında, aroma ve parfüm endüstrisinde ve biyolojik aktif özelliklerinden dolayı da ilaç endüstrisinde kullanılan ara üründür. Kamfen katılma reaksiyonlarında düzenlenme ürünleri vermektedir. Bromlu bileşikler diğer türevlere geçişte yaygın olarak kullanılırlar. Kamfenin bromlu türevininin sentezi için yoğun çalışmalar yapılmıştır ve hala yapılmaktadır. Bu amaçla çeşitli reaktif ve katalizörler kullanılmaktadır. Grubumuz tarafından geliştirilen fotobrominasyon sistemi ile bisiklik sistemlerin durdurulması başarılmıştır. Bu çalışmada kamfen yüksek sıcaklıkta ışık eşliğinde bromlanarak brom sübstitüe kamfenlerin sentezi etkili bir şekilde yüksek verimle elde edilmiştir. Ayrıca, kamfenin çeşitli şartlarında reaksiyonları incelenmiş olup, hidroksi, metoksi ve asetat türevleri için en uygun sentez yöntemleri geliştirilmiştir. Çalışmamız esnasında yapılan reaksiyonlar ve elde edilen ürünler aşağıdaki şemada kısaca gösterilmiştir. Çalışma esnasında elde edilen bileşiklerin yapıları ileri NMR teknikleri ile aydınlatılmıştır.

Gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GC/MS) of Abies balsamea, Picea mariana and Tsuga canadensis leaf essential oils assigned bornyl acetate as a major peak in A. balsamea and P. mariana, while isobornyl acetate was identified as the major peak in T. canadensis. Though these two isomers elute closely on GC, their characteristic mass spectra allow unequivocal structural assignment. Under electron impact (EI) conditions, bornyl acetate, the endo-isomer, displays a significant molecular ion m/z 196, while isobornyl acetate, the exo-form, displays a marked loss of acetic acid, resulting in a molecular ion an order of magnitude less intense than that of bornyl acetate. Thus GC/MS analyses with authentic standards may be prerequisite for chemotaxonomic studies on Pinaceae essential oils. A re-examination of reports of bornyl acetate in T. canadensis and of isobornyl acetate in P. abies is suggested.

Very widely used in pine-type fragrances, this material will also blend effectively with coumarin and amyl salicylate to give a walk-in-the-forest type effect. Adding terpinyl acetate or nopyl acetate to that mix enables it to be used give a simple Fougère accord or form part of a more complex Fougère fragrance.
Isobornyl acetate is also used to lighten and brighten herbal accords.
Arctander describes the odour like this: "Mild oily-piney, balsamic-camphoraceous odor, reminiscent of Spruce Needles or certain Pine Needles. The odor is overall thinner than that of Bornyl acetate."

Description
Isobornyl acetate has a pleasant, camphor-like odor reminiscent of some varieties of pine needles and hemlock, and a fresh, burning taste. May be prepared by treatment of camphene with acetic acid, usually in the presence of a catalyst; also by acetylation of isobomeol; depending on the starting material (d-camphene or ι-camphene), the resulting acetate may exhibit a slight optical activity; the commercial product is considered to be optically inactive.

Isobornyl Acetate has been identified in a number of essential oils. It is a colorless liquid with a pleasant, pine-needle odor. Isobornyl acetate is prepared from camphene and acetic acid in the presence of acidic catalysts (e.g., sulfuric acid) or on a styrene-divinylbenzene acid ion-exchanger.
Isobornyl acetate is used in large amounts for perfuming soaps, bath products, and air fresheners. However, the major use of isobornyl acetate is as an intermediate in the production of camphor.

Preparation
By treatment of camphene with acetic acid, usually in the presence of a catalyst; also by acetylation of isoborneol; depending on the starting material (d-camphene or l-camphene), the resulting acetate may exhibit slight optical activity; the commercial product is considered to be optically inactive.
