MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole)

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole), also called Mercaptobenzothiazole, is used in the rubber industry as an accelerant in the vulcanization industry process, as an antioxidant, and as an anti-corrosion agent, and as a textile preservative.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) is used in various applications such as tire production, footwear, and industrial rubber goods.

MBT is an organosulfur compound with the formula C6H4(NH)SC=S.

MBT is a white solid, it is used in the sulfur vulcanization of rubber.

MBT is used in the rubber industry as an accelerant in the vulcanization industry process, and as an antioxidant, and anticorrosion agent, and a textile preservative.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) (MBT) is the most important and most widely used member of the benzothiazole (BT) family.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) is typically a rubber additive, but it has also other applications, such as inhibiting biocorrosion in cooling systems or in paper manufacturing.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) is a moderately fast curing primary accelerator used in both dry rubber (natural and synthetic rubbers) and latex applications

Vulcanizates obtained with MBT tend to have a relatively low modulus, but keep good aging properties.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) is also used in latex foam curing systems.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) is not recommended to be applied in rubber products connected with beverage and food due to bitter taste.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) is easily soluble in ethyl acetone, acetone, a dilute solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate, soluble in ethyl alcohol, not easily soluble in benzene, and insoluble in water and gasoline.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) accelerates the rubberization process.

Uses of MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole):

Using MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole), rubber vulcanizes with less sulfur and at milder temperatures, both factors give a stronger product.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) finds use as a radical polymerization inhibitor, chain transfer agent, reforming agent, and additive for photoinitiators.

MBT (2-Mercaptobenzothiazole) has also been used in the past in the gold-mining industry for the froth flotation of gold from ore residue as part of the extraction process.

Sodium salt is used as a biocide and preservative in adhesives (especially based on latex, starch, casein, and animal glues), paper, textiles.

Often found together with sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate as e.g. Vancide 51.

Zinc salt is used as a secondary accelerator in latex foam vulcanization.

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole can be added to oil-based hydraulic fluids, heat-transfer fluids (oils, antifreezes), cutting fluids and other mixtures as a corrosion inhibitor, effective for copper and copper alloys.

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is also used in veterinary dermatology.

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is used as a brightener for copper sulfate baths in electroplating.
2-Mercaptobenzothiazole can also be added to silver cyanide baths.
