Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride
Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride is an organic compound with charged properties, derived from guar gum.
Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) is a domesticated legume crop, with most of of the world's production in India.
Cultivated plants grow to around 1 meter tall, with hairy stems and leaves. The leaves, seed pods and seeds are all known to be edible, and are often cooked in curries.
Harvested seeds or 'guar beans' are dehusked, roasted, hydrated and ground to produce guar gum.

Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride has charged properties that make it especially useful in hair care formulations.
It is cationic (positively charged) and works by neutralizing the negative charges on hair strands that cause static and tangling.
This ingredient can also be used in personal care products to thicken formulations and provide skin-conditioning benefits.

Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride is mainly used as viscosity adjuster, hair conditioner and film former ingredient.
Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride as a Viscosity adjuster is used to increase the thickness of liquid cosmetic products.
Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride as film former and hair conditioner it dries to form a thin coating on the hair that helps to increase the softness or smoothness of hair, reduce tangles, and to reduce surface roughness.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a conditioning agent for both the skin and hair which means that it helps to moisturize. While guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is sometimes used in skincare formulations it is more often used in hair care products.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is most widely used in hair care products due to the added benefit of helping to reduce static between hair strands. This helps to reduce frizz and minimize flyaways. It does this through its positive charge, neutralizing the negative charges on the hair that cause static. Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is also a lightweight ingredient as is often used in place of other anti-static ingredients that are heavier, weighing the hair down.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a white or yellow fine powder derived from guar beans.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a kind of galactomannan, which is a polysaccharide

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is often used as an anti-static agent and hair or skin conditioner; it also increases viscosity.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is also found in hundreds of personal care products, such as shampoo, conditioner, dandruff treatments, styling products, soap, hairspray, and other products.
Some formulators use it as a hair detangler.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is one of the most widely used synthetic cationic polymers in the cosmetics industry, this ingredient is often seen in conditioners and body washes.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride functions as a conditioning agent for skin and hair, helps deposit active ingredients on skin and/or hair, and also provides anti-static properties without weighing hair down.

Cosmetic Companies use guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride as an alternative to harsh silicones.
Whole Foods has deemed the ingredient acceptable in its body care quality standards, and the Cosmetics Ingredient Review has deemed the ingredient safe for use in cosmetic products.
Research shows the ingredient is not a skin irritant or sensitizer.

Although a great conditioning agent for both skin and hair, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is especially beneficial as a hair care product.
Because it is positively charged, or cationic, it neutralizes the negative charges on hair strands that cause hair to become static or tangled.
Better yet, it does this without weighing hair down. With this ingredient, you can have silky, non-static hair that retains its volume.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is an organic compound that is a water-soluble quaternary ammonium derivative of guar gum.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride gives conditioning properties to shampoos and after-shampoo hair care products.
The effects of the cationic charge density, guar concentration in aqueous solution, and treatment time on bleached European hair have been studied.
A mechanical testing method has been successfully applied to determine the efficacy of cationic guars to improve the ease of combing.
The results were confirmed in a shampoo formulation on both virgin and bleached hair.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a water-soluble, organic compound that is a quaternary ammonium derivative of guar (aka cluster beans).
This means Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a substance whose chemical structure has four carbon groups attached to a positively charged nitrogen atom.
While plant derived, there is a synthetic portion to it.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a conditioning ingredient that is used in both skincare and hair care products.

Scientific Facts:
Galactomannan polysaccharides, including Guar Gum, are derived from plants of the bean (also called the Legume family).
These plants make galactomannan polysaccharides as a source of energy to support the growth of the embryo within the seed.
In addition to being used in cosmetics and personal care products, Guar Gum is commonly used as a thickener in foods such as salad dressings, ice cream and soups.

Hydroxypropyl Guar is also used in artificial tear solutions.

In recent years, quaternized guar has become the polymer of choice for both hair and skin cleansers. It is often used as the conditioner and moisturizer in two-and-one shampoos and body washes. The polymer is unique in that it is derived from natural source (guar), and does not build up on hair after repeated usage. This article demonstrates comparative differences of the guar polymer to other similar polymers. In addition, several model formulas with procedures, for a variety of applications (skin care, hair care etc.) are provided for the formulating chemist.

Here are some guar facts:
The word “guar,” derived from Sanskrit, means “food for cows.”
It belongs to the legume family.
It is derived from the guar bean that is 15% hull, 45% germ and 40% endosperm.
90% is grown in northwest India. Five to 10% is grown in Pakistan.
Guar powder has many applications. In textiles, it strengthens yarn and keeps it smooth during printing and production. The powder is also used to increase the wet end strength of paper. A major application is to thicken water for use in oil exploration. In addition, guar has applications in explosives, firefighting and mining.

Personal Care Use
For personal care, the quaternized form (guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride), is widely used in hair care, liquid hand soaps and moisturizing body washes.
It has several advantages over other cosmetic polymers:
It is a natural renewable resource;
It conditions without polymer buildup;
It is biodegradable and
It is economical compared to other cellulosic polymers.
A valuable property of guar is its ability to hydrate in cold water and build viscosity. It forms a colloidal thixotropic dispersion in cold water. The rate of hydration is dependent on processing techniques. Typically, complete hydration occurs within 30 minutes. Recent improvements have produced guar that will hydrate within five minutes. A faster rate of hydration reduces manufacturing time.

Polymer Buildup (a comparative study):
The quaternized form is used in shampoos and conditioners to facilitate combing properties and provide a moisturizing effect. The positively-charged nitrogen bonds with the negatively-charged hair follicle forming a polymeric film. This bond provides a smooth and soft feel to the hair. With repeated use it is important that the polymer does not build up on the cuticle surface. Buildup results in a dull, lifeless appearance to the hair.

In order to compare polymer buildup, solutions of Polyquaternium 10 and guarhydroxypropyltrimonium chloride were prepared at 0.5%. Here is the procedure:
Damaged hair fibers (twice bleached and permed) are soaked in ethanol followed by rinsing three times with a 12.0% active TEA lauryl sulfate solution.
Each tress is soaked for 30 seconds in the 0.5% test solutions.
Each tress is washed with a 1.0% active sodium lauryl sulfate solution.
The soaking and washing is repeated five times.
After drying, the hair fibers are observed with a 200X microscope.
The study indicates that the hair fiber treated with polyquaternium 10 showed irregular polymer buildup. The guar hyroxypropyltrimonium chloride showed no evidence of buildup.

Quaternized Guar
The quaternized derivative is available as a fine powder in two forms: self-hydrating and non-self-hydrating. The formulator can choose depending on the application.
The self-hydrating is by far the most widely used for personal care cleansing products.
It is much easier to formulate and readily hydrates in water. The powder is slowly dispersed into the vortex of water, which is blended at room temperature.
After complete dispersion, the water temperature is increased to 40°C and blended for 30 minutes.
The quaternized quar will be completely hydrated. Add other components, (surfactants, pearling agents, etc.).
Heat to 65°C until the product is homogeneous.

Non-self-hydrating guar does not hydrate until the pH is neutral. The viscosity is easier to handle at this stage.
This type is used more for products that have low available water.
The powdered quaternized guar is dispersed at room temperature and blended for 30 minutes.
The pH will be 9.0-10.0. Very little buildup will occur.
The other components are then added and the pH is adjusted to 6.0-7.0.
The guar will then hydrate and the viscosity will be more manageable.
The function of both types of guar is identical.

Other Derivatives
Besides cationic guar, there are other derivatives to choose from including carboxymethylhydroxypropyl guar, hydroxypropyl guar and hydrophobically modified guar.
The quaternized and propoxylated derivative are the two most widely used for personal care products.

Quaternized guar is also known to enhance the substantivity oil on to hair fibers.
This combination is commonly used in 2-in-1 shampoos. When properly balanced, the two components provide excellent wet combing without buildup.

PRODUCTION OF Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride:
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride production starts by milling guar beans to obtain the natural gum.
That gum is then purified, filtered, and reacted with epoxides. One method involves converting guar with 3-chloro-2 hystroxyproply trimethyl ammonium chloride

Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride is a hydroxypropylated cationic guar derivative that provides conditioning benefits.
The cationic charge of Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride interacts with keratin providing a conditioning effect on hair and skin and reducing the negative effects of soaps and surfactants.

Though cationic, Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is compatible with most anionic and amphoteric surfactants.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is not sensitive to electrolytes and due to the hydropropylation shows higher hydrophilic characteristics when compared to other cationic guars.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is soluble in water at room temperature (pH adjusted to 5.5-6.0), partially soluble in aqueous methanol or ethanol solutions and insoluble in paraffin oil, petroleum ether, chloroform and ethyl ether.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is commonly used as a conditioning agent in shampoo formulations.
It forms a coacervate with anionic surfactants from the shampoo formulation upon dilution and deposits on the surface of hair providing conditioning in the form of reduced wet combing forces.
The dilution and deposition phenomenon occurs when the system is diluted below the critical micelle concentration of the shampoo surfactants, resulting in the formation of the insoluble coacervate.
The properties of the formed coacervate depend on a variety of characteristics of the polymer, including molecular weight and charge density, as well as the composition of surfactants and presence of electrolytes.
In addition, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride has reported uses in liquid soap and body wash formulations, hair conditioners, hair styling products, and skin care preparations.

The galactomannans are legume polysaccharides that function mostly as hair/skin conditioning agents and viscosity increasing agents in cosmetic products.
Their substantial molecular sizes suggest that skin penetration of these ingredients would be unlikely.
The CIR Expert Panel concluded that the galactomannans are safe in the present practices of use and concentration described in this safety assessment.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride (GHPTC) is one of the most widely used cationic polymers in the personal care industry.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration’s Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program (VCRP), the use of GHPTC has been documented in 751 products, ranking it third behind polyquaternium-10 (1,446 reported uses) and polyquaternium-7 (1,041 reported uses).
GHTPC is employed primarily as a conditioning agent in shampoos and body washes.
In many of these rinse-off products, it is also a critical deposition aid for the delivery of active ingredients and hydrophobic conditioning agents, e.g., silicones, to the skin and hair.

Chemistry and Manufacture
GHPTC, shown in Figure 1, is a “seminatural,” i.e., naturally derived but synthetically modified, cationic polysaccharide comprised of a nonionic guar gum backbone that is functionalized with ether-linked 2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride groups.
These quaternary ammonium moieties render GHPTC a non-pH-responsive cationic polyelectrolyte.
The degree of substitution (DS) values for personal care grades of GHPTC typically range from 0.07 to 0.2 cationic groups per anhydro sugar unit (0.21–0.6 cationic groups per galactomannan repeat unit) corresponding to cationic charge density values of 0.4–1.1 milliequivalents of cationic charge per gram of polymer.
The cationic charge density may also be reported in terms of nitrogen content (% N), which typically ranges from 1.2–2.1% N.
GHPTC usually exhibits relatively high molecular weight (MW) values ranging from 5.0 × 105 g/mol to 2.0 × 106 g/mol;9 however, lower molecular weight grades (0.5–2.0 × 105 g/mol) based on oxidatively and/ or enzymatically degraded GHPTC are available.

FUNCTION
   • Antistatic
   • Film forming
   • Skin conditioning
   • Viscosity controlling

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is especially beneficial as a hair care product. Because it is positively charged, or cationic, it neutralizes the negative charges on hair strands that cause hair to become static or tangled. Better yet, it does this without weighing hair down. With this ingredient, you can have silky, non-static hair that retains its volume and provides a smoother brushing experience.

N-hance™ cationic guars are cationic polymers that provide the dual benefits of conditioning and thickening. The cationic charge makes the product substantive to anionic surfaces such as skin and hair.

Many of the products in the n-hance™ cationic guar product line have a high molecular weight, water-soluble backbone and are effective viscosifiers in aqueous solutions and surfactant-based systems.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride (GHPT) is an anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory that is also used as a thickening, conditioning, and anti-static agent.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride  helps maintain a product’s smoothing action.
Some manufacturers cite it as also having skin-softening capabilities.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride  imparts excellent skin conditioning in creams or lotions that otherwise may not be used on the face.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride  adds lubricity to a product when in contact with the skin.
There is some evidence that Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride can enhance a formulation’s viscosity and stability.
Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride  is a derivative of guar gum.

Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a salt (ionic compound) consisting of a cation and an anion.
The substance organizes itself in polymers, reduces static charges by neutralizing electric charges on the surface (e.g. of the hair).
Furthermore, the substance forms a coherent film on skin, hair or nails when applied.

JAGUAR C-17 is a highly charged cationic plant-derived polymer. It provides excellent thickening and conditioning properties for hair and skin care products and improves active deposition onto hair. Ideal for use in conditioning shampoos, cream rinses, bath and shower products, lotions, creams and other personal care products. Recommended use levels: 0.1 – 0.3%

Note: Viscosity develops immediately after JAGUAR C-17 has been dispersed into water under stirring and adjusted to a slightly acidic pH (pH = 3.5 – 5.0) with citric acid for example.

Description: Cationic guar gum is a modified, naturally derived (from the seeds of the guar plant cyampopis tetragonolobus) quaternary, high-molecular weight sugar polymer (polysaccharide) combining both thickening and conditioning effects. Yellowish powder, faint characteristic odor. Soluble in water.
CAS: 65497-29-2
INCI Name: Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride
Benefits:
Effective non-gelling thickener and viscosity enhancer
Can boost foam when together with surfactants
Has additional conditioning effect due to the quaternary polymer structure as compared to regular guar gum
Use: Dissolve in water and stir thoroughly. Guar gum has a high pH >9 in order to thicken the solution that contains the guar gum the pH has to be <7. Add a tiny amount of citric acid or concentrated lemon juice to reach a lower pH and the solution is thickening. Stir well, typical use level is 0.2-2%. For external use only.
Applications: Shampoos, conditioners, lotions, creams, body washes, shower gels.

GuarCat™ cationic guar is a naturally derived water-soluble cationic polymer derived from guar gum. With the benefits of keratin substantivity and viscosity control, it imparts conditioning properties to shampoos and after-shampoo hair care products. Moderately cationic, it conditions without buildup.

GuarCat™ is lightly crosslinked with boron to ensure good water-dispersibility. Add GuarCat™ to the vortex of well-agitated water and mix until dispersed. Adjust to pH 7.0 or less to remove the boron treatment and promote hydration of the polymer (citric acid or lactic acid can be used to adjust the pH as needed). Continue mixing for 15 minutes for full viscosity development.
