Hydroxypropyl Acrylate
Hydroxypropyl acrylate is a clear, colourless liquid. It is a versatile difunctional acrylate monomer with a characteristic high reactivity. Its high functionality allows end products to be tailored for multiple applications. It can be used for crosslinking with isocyantes or melamines and imparts a range of useful properties to polymers such as hydrophilicity, improved adhesion, weatherability, chemical and scratch resistance.

.Applications of Hydroxypropyl Acrylate
Hydroxypropyl acrylate forms homopolymers and copolymers. Copolymers of hydroxypropyl acrylate can be prepared with acrylic acid and its salts, amides, esters, methacrylates, acrylonitrile, maleates, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene, unsaturated polyesters and drying oils. It is also a useful feedstock for chemical syntheses because of its ability to readily undergo addition reactions with a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds.

Hydroxypropyl acrylate is used in a number of end products such as adhesives; UV-reactive oligomers; appliance, coil, can and metal coatings; marine and maintenance finishes; automotive enamels and applications; asphalt modifiers and printing inks.

General Description
A clear colorless liquid. Toxic by inhalation and skin absorption. Corrosive to tissue. Flash point 136°F. May polymerize exothermically if heated or contaminated. If the polymerization takes place inside a container, the container may rupture violently. Vapors heavier than air. Used to make plastics.
Air & Water Reactions
Flammable. Less dense than water and slightly soluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
Hydroxypropyl acrylate polymerizes readily in the presence of heat and light generating much heat; reacts with strong oxidants. REF [Handling Chemicals Safely, 1980. p. 235].
Health Hazard
Inhalation irritates nose and throat and causes coughing; lung injury may occur. Ingestion causes irritation and burning of mouth and stomach. Vapor irritates eyes. Contact with liquid causes severe burns of eyes and burns of skin.
Fire Hazard
Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Some are oxidizers and may ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.). Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated.

Hydroxypropyl Acrylate (HPA)

Applications Hydroxypropyl Acrylate (HPA) forms homopolymers and copolymers.
Copolymers of Hydroxypropyl Acrylate (HPA) can be prepared with acrylic
acid and its salts, amides and esters, and with methacrylates, acrylonitrile,
maleic acid esters, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene,
butadiene, unsaturated polyesters and drying oils, etc. Hydroxypropyl
Acrylate (HPA) is also a very useful feedstock for chemical syntheses,
because it readily undergoes addition reactions with a wide variety of
organic and inorganic compounds.

Features & Benefits Hydroxypropyl Acrylate (HPA) can be used to impart the following properties to polymers:
Chemical resistance
Crosllinking
Adhesion
Scratch resistance
Weatherability
Rheology modifier
Low VOC

Storage & Handling In order to prevent polymerization, Hydroxypropyl Acrylate (HPA) must always be stored under air, and never under inert gases.
The presence of oxygen is required for the stabilizer to function effectively. It has to contain a stabilizer and the storage temeprature must not exceed 35 °C. Under
these conditions, a storage stability of one year can be expected upon
delivery. In order to minimize the likelihood of overstorage, the storage
procedure should strictly follow “first-in-first out” principle. For extended
storage periods over 4 weeks it is advisable to replenish the dissolved
oxygen content.
Over time the content of Porpylene Glycol Diacrylate slowly increases. If
this trace component is relevant to your process, the material should be
consumed within latest 6 months after receipt of the material.
The preferred construction material for tanks and pipes is stainless steel.
Carbon steel is also acceptable, although the formation of rust may be a
problem with product quality (colour). Iro(III)-ions have been shown to be a
weak polymerization initiator. If carbon steel is to be used, special
procedures should be used to prepare the tank for use. Storage tanks,
pumps and pipes should be earthed.

IDENTIFICATION: 2-Hydroxypropyl acrylate is a colorless to light yellow liquid. It has a sweet odor. It mixes easily with water. USE: 2-Hydroxypropyl acrylate is used in the manufacture of polymers and chemical intermediates. EXPOSURE: Workers who produce or use 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate may breathe in vapors or have direct skin contact. The general population is not likely to be exposed to 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate. If 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate is released to the environment, it will be broken down in air by reaction with hydroxyl radicals and ozone. It may be broken down in the air by sunlight. It will not volatilize into air from soil or water surfaces. It is expected to move easily through soil. It will be broken down by microorganisms.
It is not expected to build up in fish

Hydroxyethyl and 2-hydroxypropyl acrylates are prepared by the addition of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide to acrylic acid. The reactions are catalyzed by tertiary amines, quaternary ammonium salts, metal salts, and basic ion-exchange resins. The products are difficult to purify and generally contain low concentrations of acrylic acid and some diester which should be kept to a minimum since its presence leads to product instability and to polymer cross-linking.
