Ingestion can cause severe gastroenteric distress (vomiting, pain, localized corrosion, and hemorrhages), prostration, anuria, hematuria, anemia, increased number of white blood cells, icterus, coma, respiratory difficulty and circulatory failure. It can also cause nausea, metallic taste, sweating, headache, burning sensation in the esophagus and stomach, abdominal pain, hemorrhagic gastritis, weak pulse, melena, conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration, hypotension and turbidity. Other symptoms may include watery and bloody stools, burning in the mouth and throat, liver damage with jaundice, hemolysis, tenesmus, retching, collapse and convulsions. Uremia, shock and renal failure have been reported. Skin contact can cause smarting and first degree burns on short exposure. Prolonged exposure can result in second degree burns. Persons with preexisting Wilson's disease may be more susceptible to these effects. ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS: This compound is toxic by ingestion. It is a strong irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of sulfur oxides. It can be absorbed through the skin (repeated application to the skin causes poisoning). EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. INGESTION: Some heavy metals are VERY TOXIC POISONS, especially if their salts are very soluble in water (e.g., lead, chromium, mercury, bismuth, osmium, and arsenic). IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center and locate activated charcoal, egg whites, or milk in case the medical advisor recommends administering one of them. Also locate Ipecac syrup or a glass of salt water in case the medical advisor recommends inducing vomiting. Usually, this is NOT RECOMMENDED outside of a physician's care. If advice from a physician is not readily available and the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give the victim a glass of activated charcoal slurry in water or, if this is not available, a glass of milk, or beaten egg whites and IMMEDIATELY transport victim to a hospital. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, assure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital.SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: If you spill this chemical, you should dampen the solid spill material with water, then transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use absorbent paper dampened with water to pick up any remaining material. Seal your contaminated clothing and the absorbent paper in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Wash all contaminated surfaces with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned. STORAGE PRECAUTIONS: You should store this material under ambient conditions and protect it from moisture.Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté), also known as Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté), are the inorganic compounds with the chemical formula CuSO4(H2O)x, where x can range from 0 to 5. The pentahydrate (x = 5) is the most common form. Older names for this compound include blue vitriol, bluestone,[9] vitriol of copper,[10] and Roman vitriol. The pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O), the most commonly encountered salt, is bright blue. It exothermically dissolves in water to give the aquo complex [Cu(H2O)6]2+, which has octahedral molecular geometry. The structure of the solid pentahydrate reveals a polymeric structure wherein copper is again octahedral but bound to four water ligands. The Cu(II)(H2O)4 centers are interconnected by sulfate anions to form chains.[12] Anhydrous Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is a light grey powder.Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is produced industrially by treating copper metal with hot concentrated sulfuric acid or its oxides with dilute sulfuric acid. For laboratory use, Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is usually purchased. Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) can also be produced by slowly leaching low grade copper ore in air; bacteria may be used to hasten the process.[13]Commercial Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is usually about 98% pure Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté), and may contain traces of water. Anhydrous Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is 39.81 percent copper and 60.19 percent sulfate by mass, and in its blue, hydrous form, it is 25.47% copper, 38.47% sulfate (12.82% sulfur) and 36.06% water by mass. Four types of crystal size are provided based on its usage: large crystals (10–40 mm), small crystals (2–10 mm), snow crystals (less than 2 mm), and windswept powder (less than 0.15 mm).Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is commonly included in children's chemistry sets. It is often used to grow crystals in schools and in copper plating experiments, despite its toxicity. Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is often used to demonstrate an exothermic reaction, in which steel wool or magnesium ribbon is placed in an aqueous solution of CuSO4. It is used to demonstrate the principle of mineral hydration. The pentahydrate form, which is blue, is heated, turning the Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) into the anhydrous form which is white, while the water that was present in the pentahydrate form evaporates. When water is then added to the anhydrous compound, it turns back into the pentahydrate form, regaining its blue color, and is known as blue vitriol.[16] Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) pentahydrate can easily be produced by crystallization from solution as Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté), which is hygroscopic.Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) pentahydrate is used as a fungicide.[18] However, some fungi are capable of adapting to elevated levels of copper ions.Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is used to test blood for anemia. The blood is tested by dropping it into a solution of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) of known specific gravity – blood which contains sufficient hemoglobin sinks rapidly due to its density, whereas blood which does not sink or sinks slowly has insufficient amount of hemoglobin.Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is employed at a limited level in organic synthesis.[24] The anhydrous salt is used as a dehydrating agent for forming and manipulating acetal groups.[25] The hydrated salt can be intimately mingled with potassium permanganate to give an oxidant for the conversion of primary alcohols.Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) has attracted many niche applications over the centuries. In industry Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) has multiple applications. In printing it is an additive to book binding pastes and glues to protect paper from insect bites; in building it is used as an additive to concrete to provide water resistance and disinfectant qualities. Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) can be used as a coloring ingredient in artworks, especially glasses and potteries.[27] Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is also used in firework manufacture as a blue coloring agent, but it is not safe to mix Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) with chlorates when mixing firework powders.[28]Lowering a copper etching plate into the Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) solution.Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) was once used to kill bromeliads, which serve as mosquito breeding sites.[29] Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is used as a molluscicide to treat bilharzia in tropical countries.Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is an irritant.[41] The usual routes by which humans can receive toxic exposure to Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) are through eye or skin contact, as well as by inhaling powders and dusts.[42] Skin contact may result in itching or eczema.[43] Eye contact with Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) can cause conjunctivitis, inflammation of the eyelid lining, ulceration, and clouding of the cornea.[44]Upon oral exposure, Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is moderately toxic.[42] According to studies, the lowest dose of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) that had a toxic effect on humans is 11 mg/kg.[45] Because of its irritating effect on the gastrointestinal tract, vomiting is automatically initiated in case of the ingestion of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté). However, if Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) is retained in the stomach, the symptoms can be severe. After 1–12 grams of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) are swallowed, such poisoning signs may occur as a metallic taste in the mouth, burning pain in the chest, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, discontinued urination, which leads to yellowing of the skin. In cases of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) poisoning, injury to the brain, stomach, liver, or kidneys may also occur. In the literature, there are no data on the effects of copper (Cu) on the development and birth defects of live-bearers freshwater fish embryos. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) (CuSO4) pentahydrate on the development of embryos in the guppies (Poecilia reticulata). Guppies were exposed to concentration of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mg/L of CuSO4 pentahydrate for 24 h. After 15 days, the female fish was euthanised and the embryos were dissected. No visible lesions were observed in the embryos of guppies exposed to 0.5 mg/L of CuSO4 pentahydrate. In the guppies exposed to 1.0 mg/L CuSO4 pentahydrate, the embryos showed visible abnormalities from blastodisc to middle-eyed stages of development. In the late (very late-eyed and mature embryo) stages embryos, the morphological abnormalities were not observed. The exposure to 1.5 mg/L of CuSO4 pentahydrate caused the death of guppies and their embryos during 24 h. In the light of these results, the 1.0 mg/L and higher dose of CuSO4 pentahydrate is not recommended for the treatment of guppies because this decreases the viability of guppies and causes morphological abnormalities and mortality in their embryos. The recrystallization of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) from aqueous solution represents an important unit operation in copper mining and recovery and there is significant current interest, on environmental grounds, to the use of sea water as an alternative crystallisation solvent. Hence, the effect of sodium chloride on the shape, size, composition and growth kinetics of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) pentahydrate crystals is assessed and compared with results using freshwater in order to understand the effect of the principal ions present in brine (Na+ and Cl−) on the crystallisation process. The cooling rate and sodium chloride concentration are observed to have an effect in the crystal shape and size of the Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) crystals albeit the purity of crystals is not significantly affected by the sodium chloride concentration used. Analysis of the crystal growth kinetics of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate (Sulfate de cuivre pentahydraté) in the supersaturation range from 0.682 to 0.787, and from 0.348 to 0.458 in aqueous and brine solvent, respectively, reveals a significant dependence on the growth environment, in which the growth of the {1 −1 0} and {1 −1 −1} faces of crystals grown in aqueous solutions is consistent with the power law and BCF mechanisms ( of 99.5% and 96%, respectively). In contrast for crystals grown in brine the results suggest that both the {1 −1 0} and {1 −1 −1} faces grow via the BCF mechanism ( of 99.5% and 96%, respectively). This difference in the face-specific growth mechanisms, in the different crystallisation media, is evidenced in the crystal shape revealing slightly more elongated crystals in aqueous solutions.
