Commentaires: Le glutaraldéhyde est très rarement vendu ou utilisé sous forme pure. Généralement, on le trouve en solution aqueuse dont la concentration varie entre 1 et 50 %. Ces solutions commerciales contiennent habituellement un stabilisant en faible concentration (ex. méthanol, entre 0,05 et 0,5 %), pour ralentir la polymérisation graduelle du glutaraldéhyde.

Le glutaraldéhyde, C5H8O2 ou OCH (CH₂) ₃CHO, est un liquide huileux transparent avec une odeur piquante. L'exposition au glutaraldéhyde peut provoquer les symptômes suivants: irritation de la gorge et des poumons, asthme et difficultés respiratoires, dermatite, irritation nasale, éternuements, respiration sifflante, brûlure des yeux et conjonctivite. Les travailleurs peuvent être lésés par une exposition au glutaraldéhyde. Les travailleurs peuvent être exposés au glutaraldéhyde par inhalation ou par contact avec la peau.

Les usages

Désinfection

Le glutaraldéhyde est utilisé comme désinfectant et médicament.

Généralement appliqué sous forme de solution, il est utilisé pour stériliser les instruments chirurgicaux et d'autres zones.

 

Fixateur

Le glutaraldéhyde est utilisé dans les applications de biochimie en tant qu'agent de réticulation et fixateur homobifonctionnel réactif aux amines avant SDS-PAGE, coloration ou microscopie électronique. Il tue rapidement les cellules en réticulant leurs protéines. Il est généralement utilisé seul ou en mélange avec du formaldéhyde comme premier des deux processus de fixation pour stabiliser des échantillons tels que des bactéries, du matériel végétal et des cellules humaines. Une deuxième procédure de fixation utilise du tétroxyde d'osmium pour réticuler et stabiliser les lipides des membranes cellulaires et organites. La fixation est généralement suivie d'une déshydratation du tissu dans de l'éthanol ou de l'acétone, suivie d'une incorporation dans une résine époxy ou une résine acrylique.

 

Une autre application pour le traitement des protéines avec du glutaraldéhyde est l'inactivation de toxines bactériennes pour générer des vaccins anatoxines, par exemple, le composant anatoxine coquelucheuse (coqueluche) dans le vaccin Boostrix Tdap produit par GlaxoSmithKline.

 

Dans une application connexe, le glutaraldéhyde est parfois utilisé dans le tannage du cuir et dans l'embaumement.

Le glutaraldéhyde est produit industriellement par oxydation du cyclopentène. En variante, il peut être préparé par la réaction de Diels-Alder d'acroléine et d'éthers vinyliques suivie d'une hydrolyse.

 

Comme beaucoup d'autres dialdéhydes, (par exemple, le glyoxal) et aldéhydes simples (par exemple, le formaldéhyde), le glutaraldéhyde se transforme en solution aqueuse en divers hydrates qui à leur tour se transforment en d'autres espèces équilibrantes

 

Histoire et culture

Le glutaraldéhyde est entré en usage médical dans les années 1960.Il figure sur la liste des médicaments essentiels de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, les médicaments les plus sûrs et les plus efficaces nécessaires dans un système de santé.Il existe un certain nombre d'autres utilisations commerciales telles que le tannage du cuir.

 

Une solution de glutaraldéhyde d'une concentration de 0,1% à 1,0% peut être utilisée comme biocide pour la désinfection du système et comme agent de conservation pour le stockage à long terme. C'est un stérilisant qui tue les endospores en plus de nombreux micro-organismes et virus.

 

En tant que biocide, le glutaraldéhyde est un composant du fluide de fracturation hydraulique («fracking»). Il est inclus dans l'additif appelé Alpha 1427. La croissance bactérienne nuit à l'extraction du pétrole et du gaz de ces puits. Le glutaraldéhyde est pompé en tant que composant du fluide de fracturation pour inhiber la croissance microbienne

Glutaraldehyde is an organic compound with the formula CH2(CH2CHO)2. A pungent colorless oily liquid, glutaraldehyde is used to sterilise medical and dental equipment. It is also used for industrial water treatment and as a preservative. It is mainly available as an aqueous solution, and in these solutions the aldehyde groups are hydrated. Glutaraldehyde is a chemical frequently used as a disinfectant and sterilizing agent against bacteria and viruses (2% solution), an embalming fluid and tissue fixative, a component of leather tanning solutions, and an intermediate in the production of certain sealants, resins, dyes, and electrical products (HSDB, 1996). For commercial purposes, solutions of 99%, 50%, and 20% are available. Glutaraldehyde is also an atmospheric reaction product of cyclohexene. The annual statewide industrial emissions from facilities reporting under the Air Toxics Hot Spots Act in California based on the most recent inventory were estimated to be 29,603 pounds of glutaraldehyde
