HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL

Hydrogenated castor oil, also known as castor wax, is a hardened vegetable wax produced from pure castor oil through the chemical process of hydrogenation. When hydrogen is introduced to pure castor oil in the presence of a nickel catalyst, the resulting product becomes waxy, highly viscous, and more saturated.Hydrogenated castor oil is an ingredient prevalently found in many cosmetics, varnishes, and polishes. You most likely use it on a daily basis. Unlike pure castor oil, which is said to have a slightly offensive smell, it is completely odorless. Hydrogenated castor oil is also insoluble in water.But why hydrogenate castor oil when the pure oil works so well for so many different applications? What is the purpose of hydrogenating castor oil, exactly? ydrogenated Castor Oil, also known as castor wax, is derived from castor beans (Ricinus communis), which is typically a liquid at room temperature, that has been processed by adding hydrogen to make it more stable and raises its melting point so that it is a solid at room temperature. It is odorless and insoluble in water. Historically, ancient Egyptians used castor oil as fuel for their lamps. Castor oil has also been used as a lubricant in machine and aircraft engines, and is added to certain paints, dyes and varnishes as well. Ingestion of pure castor oil works as a laxative to treat constipation.Hydrogenated castor oil is a hard brittle, high melting point waxy substance with faint characteristic of fatty wax odor and is tasteless. It is compatible with beeswax, carnauba and candelilla wax. It is relatively insoluble in most organic solvents though it will dissolve in a number of solvents and oils at an elevated temperature but on cooling will form gels or a paste like mass. It forms a smooth, stable anionic emulsion with emulsifiers and triethanolamine stearate. It can also be emulsified with a cationic emulsifying agent, making emulsions that are also stable. It is mainly used in plastics, textiles, lubricants etc.As a pharmaceutical grade inactive ingredient, castor oil is used to emulsify and solubilize oils and other water-insoluble substances. A brand name product that contains castor oil is Cremophor and it contains a range of non-ionic polyethoxylated detergents. It was originally developed for use as solubilizers and emulsifiers. This research grade product is intended for use in R&D and development only. Hydrogenated castor oil (castor wax) is also used an extended release agent; stiffening agent; tablet and capsule lubricant. Castor oil has been used as a stimulant laxative to relieve occasional constipation, but it is rarely used today due to gentler and safer alternatives.

Hydrogenated Castor Oil (Flakes) is a versatile ingredient for several applications. Also called castor wax, this product is a hard, brittle vegetable wax produced from the hydrogenation of castor oil. This product is used as an emollient for ointments and deodorants. It is also applied as a thickening agent.

Castor wax is used in polishes, oils paints [3] (Old Holland, Lefranc), cosmetics, electrical capacitors, carbon paper, lubrication and coatings and greases where resistance to moisture, oils and petrochemical products is required. Castor wax is also useful in polyurethane coating formulation, as it contains three secondary hydroxyl groups. These coating compositions are useful as a top coat varnish for leather, wood and rubber. Castor wax can also be added to beeswax for encaustic painting.

How is it made?

The castor oil is expeller pressed from the beans of the castor plant (Ricinus communis) and then purified by heat and filtration. As mentioned the oils is a liquid at room temperature. The process of hydrogenation adds saturation to the oil, which increases the melting point and results in the hydrogenated oil being a solid at room temperature. The process of hydrogenation requires that the oil be heated under pressure in the presence of a nickel catalyst. The nickel is then reclaimed and reused for environmental reasons.

 

What are the alternatives?

The synthetic polymers (polysiloxanes), also known as silicones, are very commonly used as an alternative for their ability to provide an easily applied and water resistant product. Other materials that can be used for this purpose in personal care products specifically include synthetic waxes, petroleum waxes, or other ethoxylated oils, which would not meet our Stewardship Model.

Is this the right option for me?

Hydrogenated Castor Oil has a long history of safe use in personal care products. Castor oil is sourced from the castor bean plant native to tropical areas in Eastern Africa and the Mediterranean Basin. It is an age-old ingredient (it’s over 4,000 years old!) with many uses including as a shoe polish, food additive and motor lubricant. You would be reasonable to think that putting shoe polish on your face wouldn’t be the best idea, but it turns out castor oil has some unique properties that make it a stalwart in thick and gloss-giving formulas (think lipsticks and highlighters). So what is so special about it? The answer is its main fatty acid, called ricinoleic acid (85-95%).  Unlike other fatty acids, ricinoleic acid has an extra water-loving part (aka -OH group) on its fatty chain that gives Castor Oil several unique properties. First, it is thicker than other oils, then its solubility is different (e.g. dissolves in alcohol but not in mineral oil), and it allows all kinds of chemical modifications other oils do not, hence the lots of Castor oil-derived ingredients. It is also more glossy than other oils, in fact, it creates the highest gloss of all natural oils when applied to the skin. While it is very unlikely (and this is true for pretty much every ingredient), cases of reactions to castor oil have been reported, so if your skin is sensitive, it never hurts to patch test.

 Etymology

The name probably comes from a confusion between the Ricinus plant that produces it and another plant, the Vitex agnus-castus.[4][5] However, an alternative etymology suggests that it was used as a replacement for castoreum.[6]

Castor oil is well known as a source of ricinoleic acid, a monounsaturated, 18-carbon fatty acid. Among fatty acids, ricinoleic acid is unusual in that it has a hydroxyl functional group on the 12th carbon. This functional group causes ricinoleic acid (and castor oil) to be more polar than most fats. The chemical reactivity of the alcohol group also allows chemical derivatization that is not possible with most other seed oils. Because of its ricinoleic acid content, castor oil is a valuable chemical in feedstocks, commanding a higher price than other seed oils. As an example, in July 2007, Indian castor oil sold for about US$0.90 per kilogram (US$0.41 per pound)[citation needed] whereas U.S. soybean, sunflower and canola oils sold for about US$0.30 per kilogram (US$0.14 per pound).[7]

Food and preservative

In the food industry, castor oil (food grade) is used in food additives, flavorings, candy (e.g., polyglycerol polyricinoleate or PGPR in chocolate),[8] as a mold inhibitor, and in packaging. Polyoxyethylated castor oil (e.g., Kolliphor EL)[9] is also used in the food industries.[10]

 

In India, Pakistan and Nepal food grains are preserved by the application of castor oil. It stops rice, wheat, and pulses from rotting. For example, the legume pigeon pea is commonly available coated in oil for extended storage.

Use of castor oil as a laxative is attested to in the circa 1550 BC Ebers Papyrus,[11] and was in use several centuries earlier.[12] The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has categorized castor oil as "generally recognized as safe and effective" (GRASE) for over-the-counter use as a laxative with its major site of action the small intestine, where it is digested into ricinoleic acid.[13]

Alternative medicinal use

In naturopathy, castor oil is promoted as a treatment for several human health conditions,[24] including cysts. According to the American Cancer Society, "available scientific evidence does not support claims that castor oil on the skin cures cancer or any other disease."[25]

 

Skin and hair care

Castor oil has been used in cosmetic products included in creams and as a moisturizer. Small amounts of castor oil are frequently used in cold process soap to increase lathering in the finished bar. It also has been used to enhance hair conditioning in other products and for supposed anti-dandruff properties.[26]

 

Coatings

Castor oil is used as a bio-based polyol in the polyurethane industry. The average functionality (number of hydroxyl groups per triglyceride molecule) of castor oil is 2.7, so it is widely used as a rigid polyol and in coatings.[1] One particular use is in a polyurethane concrete where a castor-oil emulsion is reacted with an isocyanate (usually polymeric MDI Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) and a Cement and Construction aggregate. This is applied fairly thickly as a slurry which is self-levelling. It is not a drying oil, meaning that it has a low reactivity with air compared to oils such as linseed oil and tung oil. Dehydration of castor oil yields linoleic acids, which do have drying properties[1]. In this process, the OH group on the ricinoleic acid along with a hydrogen from the next carbon atom are removed yielding a double bond which then has oxidative cross-linking properties yielding the drying oil. Precursor to industrial chemicals

Castor oil can be broken down into other chemical compounds that have numerous applications.[28][29][30] Transesterification followed by steam cracking gives undecylenic acid, a precursor to specialized polymer nylon 11, and heptanal, a component in fragrances.[31] Breakdown of castor oil in strong base gives 2-octanol, both a fragrance component and a specialized solvent, and the dicarboxylic acid sebacic acid. The production of lithium grease consumes a significant amount of castor oil. Hydrogenation and saponification of castor oil yields 12-hydroxystearic acid which is then reacted with lithium hydroxide or lithium carbonate to give high performance lubricant grease.[34]

 

Since it has a relatively high dielectric constant (4.7), highly refined and dried castor oil is sometimes used as a dielectric fluid within high performance high voltage capacitors. Lubrication

Vegetable oils like castor oil are typically unattractive alternatives to petroleum-derived lubricants because of their poor oxidative stability.[35][36] Castor oil has better low-temperature viscosity properties and high-temperature lubrication than most vegetable oils, making it useful as a lubricant in jet, diesel, and racing engines.[37] The viscosity of castor oil at 10 °C is 2,420 centipoise.[38] However, castor oil tends to form gums in a short time, and therefore its usefulness is limited to engines that are regularly rebuilt, such as racing engines. World War I aviation rotary engines used castor oil as a primary lubricant, mixed with the fuel

Castor oil was the preferred lubricant for rotary engines, such as the Gnome engine after that engine's widespread adoption for aviation in Europe in 1909. It was used almost universally in rotary engined Allied aircraft in World War I. Germany had to make do with inferior ersatz oil for its rotary engines, which resulted in poor reliability.[40][41][42]

 

The methanol-fueled two-cycle glow plug engines used for aeromodelling, since their adoption by model airplane hobbyists in the 1940s, have used varying percentages of castor oil as a lubricant. It is highly resistant to degradation when the engine has its fuel-air mixture leaned for maximum engine speed. Gummy residues can still be a problem for aeromodelling powerplants lubricated with castor oil, however, usually requiring eventual replacement of ball bearings when the residue accumulates within the engine's bearing races. One British manufacturer of sleeve valved four-cycle model engines has stated the "varnish" created by using castor oil in small percentages can improve the pneumatic seal of the sleeve valve, improving such an engine's performance over time. Turkey red oil, also called sulphonated (or sulfated) castor oil, is made by adding sulfuric acid to vegetable oils, most notably castor oil.[43] It was the first synthetic detergent after ordinary soap. Some parents punished children with a dose of castor oil.[46][47] Physicians recommended against the practice because they did not want medicines associated with punishment.[48]

 

A heavy dose of castor oil could be used as a humiliating punishment for adults. Colonial officials used it in the British Raj (India) to deal with recalcitrant servants.[49] Belgian military officials prescribed heavy doses of castor oil in Belgian Congo as a punishment for being too sick to work.[50]

 

The most famous use as punishment came in Fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini. It was a favorite tool used by the Blackshirts to intimidate and humiliate their opponents.[51][52][53] Political dissidents were force-fed large quantities of castor oil by Fascist squads. It is said that Mussolini's power was backed by "the bludgeon and castor oil".[55] In lesser quantities, castor oil was also used as an instrument of intimidation, for example, to discourage civilians or soldiers who would call in sick either in the factory or in the military. It took decades after Mussolini's death before the myth of castor oil as a panacea for a wide range of diseases and medical conditions was totally demystified, as it was also widely administered to pregnant women and elderly or mentally ill patients in hospitals in the false belief it had no negative side effects.

 

Today, the Italian terms manganello and olio di ricino, even used separately, still carry strong political connotations (especially the latter). These words are still used to satirize patronizing politicians, or the authors of disliked legislation. They should be used with caution in common conversation. The terms Usare l'olio di ricino, ("to use castor oil") and usare il manganello ("to use the bludgeon") mean "to coerce or abuse", and can be misunderstood in the absence of proper context. Also in Greece, during the 4th of August Regime, castor oil was used as a form of punishment.[57]

 

Safety

The castor seed contains ricin, a toxic lectin. Heating during the oil extraction process denatures and deactivates the lectin. However, harvesting castor beans may not be without risk.[58] The International Castor Oil Association FAQ document states that castor beans contain an allergenic compound called CB1A. This chemical is described as being virtually non-toxic but has the capacity to sensitize people with hypersensitivity. The allergen may be neutralized by treatment with a variety of alkaline agents. The allergen is not present in the castor oil itself. Since castor oil is sometimes used to induce labor in full-term pregnancies (scientific evidence of its effectiveness is lacking),[62] consuming castor oil to treat constipation is not considered safe in pregnancies that are not at full term yet, as it may cause contractions of the womb.[63]

Castor oil has long been used commercially as a highly renewable resource for the chemical industry.1,2 It is a vegetable oil obtained by pressing the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis L.) that is mainly cultivated in Africa, South America, and India.3,4 Major castor oil-producing countries include Brazil, China, and India. This oil is known to have been domesticated in Eastern Africa and was introduced to China from India approximately 1,400 years ago.4 India is a net exporter of castor oil, accounting for over 90% of castor oil exports, while the United States, European Union, and China are the major importers, accounting for 84% of imported castor oil.5,6

 

India is known as the world leader in castor seed and oil production and leads the international castor oil trade. Castor oil production in this country usually fluctuates between 250,000 and 350,000 tons per year. Approximately 86% of castor seed production in India is concentrated in Gujarat, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. Specifically, the regions of Mehsana, Banaskantha, and Saurashtra/Kutch in Gujarat and the districts of Nalgonda and Mahboobnagar of Andhra Pradesh are the major areas of castor oil production in India.7 The economic success of castor crops in Gujarat in the 1980s and thereafter can be attributed to a combination of a good breeding program, a good extension model, coupled with access to well-developed national and international markets.8

 

Castor is one of the oldest cultivated crops; however, it contributes to only 0.15% of the vegetable oil produced in the world. The oil produced from this crop is considered to be of importance to the global specialty chemical industry because it is the only commercial source of a hydroxylated fatty acid.9 Even though castor oil accounts for only 0.15% of the world production of vegetable oils, worldwide consumption of this commodity has increased more than 50% during the past 25 years, rising from approximately 400,000 tons in 1985 to 610,000 tons in 2010.9,10 On average, worldwide consumption of castor oil increased at a rate of 7.32 thousand tons per year. There are various challenges that make castor crop cultivation difficult to pursue. Castor plant grows optimally in tropical summer rainfall areas. It grows well from the wet tropics to the subtropical dry regions with an optimum temperature of 20°C–25°C. The high content of the oil in the seeds can be attributed to the warm climate conditions, but temperatures over 38°C can lead to poor seed setting. Additionally, temperatures low enough to induce the formation of frost is known to kill the plant.11

 

As of 2008, three countries (India, China, and Brazil) produced 93% of the world’s supply of castor oil. Because production is concentrated mainly in these three countries, total castor production varies widely from year to year due to fluctuations in rainfall and the size of the areas utilized for planting. As a consequence, this concentration has led to cyclic castor production. In the United States, the hazardous chemical products found in the castor plant, especially ricin has been a major concern.9,12–15 The body of scientific literature related to castor plants, especially on the detailed processing parameters involved in commercial production, has been relatively small over the past century.9 Over the years, there has been considerable interest and research done on the uses and properties of castor but not on a commercial scale. Castor oil studies have shown increasing growth with the number of manuscripts increasing sixfold since the 1980s (Fig. 1). While alternative breeding programs and marketing can lead to economic growth of castor oil production, at the commercial level, various projects fail due to the lack of knowledge about novel processing methods and parameters used in castor oil production. This manuscript discusses those processing parameters in detail. Although the castor bean processing method can typically be considered a simple process, it can also be complicated if the operators are unaware of its exact processing parameters and operating procedures. Specifically, process parameters for castor oil production should be optimized to achieve high oil extraction efficiency through a solvent extraction method.16,17 No scientific literature currently exists discussing in detail the commercial castor processing parameters. This contribution discusses in detail the commercial castor processing parameters and the important key points needed on how to manufacture the desired quality of castor oil, both of which are important to castor oil producers.

Hint yağı çalışmaları, 1980'lerden bu yana altı kat artan el yazması sayısıyla artan bir büyüme göstermiştir (Şekil 1). Alternatif ıslah programları ve pazarlama, hint yağı üretiminin ekonomik büyümesine yol açabilirken, ticari düzeyde, hint yağı üretiminde kullanılan yeni işleme yöntemleri ve parametreleri hakkında bilgi eksikliği nedeniyle çeşitli projeler başarısız olur. Bu el yazması, bu işleme parametrelerini ayrıntılı olarak tartışmaktadır. Teker fasulyesi işleme yöntemi tipik olarak basit bir işlem olarak kabul edilebilmesine rağmen, operatörler onun tam işleme parametrelerinin ve işletim prosedürlerinin farkında değilse karmaşık olabilir. Spesifik olarak, hint yağı üretimi için işlem parametreleri, bir çözücü ekstraksiyon yöntemi aracılığıyla yüksek yağ ekstraksiyon verimliliği elde etmek için optimize edilmelidir. 16 , 17Şu anda ticari teker işleme parametrelerini ayrıntılı olarak tartışan hiçbir bilimsel literatür mevcut değildir. Bu katkı, her ikisi de hint yağı üreticileri için önemli olan ticari hint işleme parametrelerini ve istenen kalitede hint yağının nasıl üretileceği konusunda ihtiyaç duyulan önemli kilit noktaları ayrıntılı olarak tartışmaktadır.
