A broad-spectrum antimicrobial disinfectant
This technology is a disinfectant composed of a combination of naturally antimicrobial botanical blends and popular synthetic antimicrobials like para-chloro-meta-xylenol (PCMX).

Unmet Need: Broad-spectrum antimicrobial for infection prevention
Current disinfectants are only somewhat effective in preventing infection, with 5% of hospital patients ending up with healthcare-associated infections. While Dettol, a disinfectant composed of PCMX, pine oil and castor oil, is rigorously implemented, these infection statistics imply that there is much room for improvement. Improvements in scope of antimicrobial activity, whether it is applicable to a broader range of microbes or has more lasting antimicrobial effects, have positive implications for both general public health and the healthcare system.

The Technology: Improved disinfectant combining botanical and synthetic antimicrobials for broad-spectrum disinfection
This disinfectant combines the natural antibacterial and antifungal activities of essential oils and botanicals with a powerful chemical disinfectant such as para-chloro-meta-xylenol (PCMX). This technology leverages the observation that many botanical components have inherent antimicrobial and antifungal capabilities but are less harsh then chemical agents. As such, they often exhibit reduced risk of skin irritation compared with synthetic disinfectants. This technology combines the natural disinfectant properties of essential oils and botanicals with the lasting protection of synthetic disinfectants such as PCMX, chlorhexidine, and quaternary ammonium salts to generate a broad-spectrum disinfectant formulation for superior protection against infection in high-risk environments such as hospitals.

Applications:
Antimicrobial personal healthcare products
Disinfectant for agricultural and animal husbandry products
Disinfectants for childcare
Disinfectants for burn or open wounds
Surface disinfectants for clinical and household uses
Laboratory disinfectant
Laundry detergent additive
Anti-acne products
Advantages:
Combines of a wide variety of natural antimicrobial and antifungal botanicals for reduced harshness upon topical administration
Combination of different synthetic compounds allows for disinfection against both gram-positive and gram negative bacteria as well as fungi and viruses
Broad effectiveness allows for use in clinical and household applications

History
Chloroxylenol was first made in 1927.[7] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.[8] It is sold in a number of formulations and under a number of brand names, including Dettol.[3][9]

Soon after it was created parachlorometaxylenol was then called PCMX, but this was thought to be a poor name and it was renamed Dettol. Then in 1932 it was marketed in Britain and in India. It had a white on green bottle with a white sword depicted.[10][11] It is sold, in the same style bottle, in Argentina and Uruguay to this day.[12]

Properties
Side effects are generally few but can include skin irritation.[2][5] It may be used mixed with water or alcohol.[2] Chloroxylenol is most effective against gram-positive bacteria.[2] It works by disruption of the cell wall and stopping the function of enzymes.[6]

Uses
Chloroxylenol is used in hospitals and households for disinfection and sanitation. It is also commonly used in antibacterial soaps, wound-cleansing applications and household antiseptics such as Dettol liquid (to which it contributes its distinctive odor), cream and ointments.[13]

Side effects
Chloroxylenol is not significantly toxic to humans, is practically non-toxic to birds, and is moderately toxic to freshwater invertebrates. It is highly toxic to fish, cats, and some amphibians and should not be used around them.[14] It is a mild skin irritant and may trigger allergic reactions in some individuals.[
