Now there is not a single area of industry that can do without adhesive elastomer materials. Composites based on synthetic rubbers comprise 75% of the total volume of adhesive materials produced, which is due to the combination of unique properties typical of the elastomer base of the adhesive. The base of many imported adhesives for the bonding of rubber to metal is chlorinated natural rubber. As an alternative, chlorinated
synthetic isoprene rubber has been proposed, developed at the Scientific Research Institute for Synthetic Rubber in St Petersburg. The chlorinated isoprene rubber was compared with imported chlorinated natural rubber in adhesive composites, and the physicomechanical properties of mixes based on a blend of chlorinated rubber and nitrile butadiene rubber were investigated. The investigation was conducted on chlorinated natural
rubber of grade Pergut S20, chlorinated isoprene rubber SKI-3, and nitrile butadiene rubbers of grades BNKS-28AMN and SKN-26S. The influence of the ratio of chlorinated rubber to nitrile butadiene rubber and the technological factors of mix preparation on the properties of films produced from them was established. It was shown that, in terms of the level of properties, home-produced chlorinated rubber can be used as the
base for adhesives for hot bonding of rubber to metal instead of imported Pergut S20. The bonding of different materials using adhesive composites is now one of the most widely used technological processes in the production of different articles. There is barely a single sector of industry that can do without adhesive materials. The variety of areas of their application determines the most diverse requirements
concerning both the properties of the adhesive joints and the bonding technology. Worldwide, the volumes and sales of adhesive and sealing materials, including elastomer materials, are increasing. Composites based on synthetic polymers now comprise 75% of the total volume of the adhesives produced. In addition, the demand for them is increasing continually, and consequently the scales of production
are growing.
In spite of the fact that the development of adhesive materials is one of the most traditional areas of application of polymers, the areas of the chemical industry that are occupied with the production of polymers and the delivery of adhesives are developing independently, and the range of adhesives is being formed under the influence of the established range of polymer materials. The effective adhesive polymers include chlorinated
rubbers, which are products of the complete chlorination of natural or synthetic rubbers with a content of bound chlorine of the order of 60-70% [1]. It is these, in particular chlorinated natural rubber, that comprise the base of most grades of known adhesive ‘Hemosil', including for the bonding of rubber to metal in the process of vulcanisation. In the Chemistry of Thermoplastic Elastomers Faculty of the MITKhT, at one time an analogue of this adhesive for
the bonding to metal of vulcanisates of non-polar rubbers based on chlorinated polychloroprene (chlorinated chloroprene rubber) and methylvinylpyridine butadiene rubber (SKMVP) was developed. In the given adhesive system SKMVP, the chlorinated chloroprene rubber acted as an elasticiser, and also promoted an increase in bond strength at the adhesive-rubber boundary, and thus in the strength of the adhesive joint as a whole.
However, in spite of all the advantages of the given system, chlorinated chloroprene rubber, like SKMVP, has not been produced for a long time. At the same time, the demand for chlorinated rubbers is high.
T/26 International Polymer Science and Technology, Vol. 44, No. 5, 2017 At the S.V. Lebedev Scientific Research Institute for Synthetic Rubber in St Petersburg, work has begun on the synthesis of home-produced chlorinated rubber based on SKI-3 isoprene [3]. We have conducted a comparative investigation of its properties with the properties of chlorinated natural rubber ‘Pergut' of grades S20, S40,
and S90, which is widely used at present. To conduct the experiments, 20% solutions of the investigated polymers in ethyl acetate were prepared. Figure 1 shows the influence of the type of chlorinated rubber on the bond strength of rubber based on rubbers SKS-30ARK and SKI-3 to metal according to GOST 209-62, and bonding was conducted in the process of vulcanisation. The best results in all cases are indicated by Pergut S20, which is mainly due
to its lower viscosity and consequently to better diffusion into the polymer and to filling of microunevennesses of the metal, and it also promotes the formation of a less defective film in the bonding of rubber to metal in the process of vulcanisation. The lower bond strength (15% lower) of the home-produced product can be attributed to the absence of stabiliser and consequently to the active process of dehydrochlorination proceeding parallel to
the vulcanisation process.
It should be pointed out that chlorinated rubbers are rarely used without plasticisers or elasticisers in view oftheir brittleness [4]. A large number of studies have been devoted to the use of polymer blends in adhesives in which chlorinated rubbers are actively applied to increase the adhesion and strength characteristics. An analysis of the patent literature showed that blends of nitrogen- and chlorine-containing polymers are very promising and widely used by foreign producers of adhesives. We studied the adhesion properties of adhesives
based on chlorinated natural (Pergut S20) and synthetic (SKI-3) rubbers in a blend with nitrile butadiene rubbers BNKS-28AMN and SKN-26S. Figure 2 presents the results of investigating a model system based on a blend of chlorinated isoprene rubber SKI-3 and different nitrile butadiene rubbers in the bonding of rubber to metal in the process of vulcanisation. It must be noted that the use of a polymer blend significantly levels out the difference in bond strength
between the imported and home-produced chlorinated rubbers. The stabilising properties of nitrogen-containing substances for chlorinated polymers through the binding of the hydrogen chloride formed during dehydrochlorination are well known. It can also be assumed that, besides elasticisation of the adhesive film and stabilisation in the system, interaction of the polymers used occurs, in addition to the binding of the hydrogen chloride formed,
by the action of high temperatures with the formation of a nitrilium ion [5]. Chlorinated polymers have functional groups capable of interacting with nitrile groups of the rubber; essentially, between the rubber and the chlorinated polymers an interaction of the acid-base type is realised, where the nitrile groups of the rubber, being a proton acceptor, fulfil the function of the base, and the chlorinated polymer is the proton donor, i.e. the
acid. The technological compatibility of the chlorinated rubber and nitrile butadiene rubber in solution must also be pointed out.
The bond strength of adhesive joints is a complex index that is influenced by a large number of factors, the main factors being the adhesive and cohesive strength of the

adhesive film [6]. It must be noted that in this case the law of additivity does not apply, and the considerable difference in the values of the given indices has a greater negative effect on the bond strength of the adhesive joint.
Investigation of the physicomechanical properties of films based on a KhNK/BNKS-28AMN polymer blend was conducted on an Instron electromechanical tensile testing complex under uniaxial elongation. Specimens
were prepared in the form of dumbbell testpieces from film cast in petri dishes with a prescribed thickness of 1 mm from 10% polymer solutions of polymers in ethyl acetate. Films were held beforehand for 2 min at
temperatures of 80 and 150°C. Figure 3 presents the dependence of the nominal strength of films on the ratio of KhNK and BNKS-28AMN.
In view of the brittleness of the chlorinated polymers, there are difficulties in accurately measuring strength with a low content of nitrile rubber. With increase in its content there is a gradual reduction in strength, which seems
to be due to elasticisation of the system by the nitrile Rubber. Thermal action on the films lowers their strength, which is mainly connected with dehydrochlorination of the chlorinated rubber. However, it must be noted that,
with increase in the BNK content, the difference in the negative effect of temperature is levelled out. As stated earlier, this is due to stabilisation of the plastic by the nitrogen-containing nitrile butadiene rubber.
The conducted investigations of chlorinated SKI as the base of adhesives and also as an additive to nitrile butadiene rubber demonstrate the high bond strength indices between rubber and metal in the process of
vulcanisation, which are on a par with those of imported chlorinated natural rubber Pergut S20. Thus, further investigations in the area of the creation and application of chlorinated isoprene rubber are now an urgent
problem, the solution of which will make it possible to switch to the development of home-produced, modern, competitive adhesive composites.
