Benzisothiazolinone has a microbicide and a fungicide mode of action. It is widely used as a preservative, for example in: emulsion paints, caulks, varnishes, adhesives, inks, and photographic processing solutions home cleaning and car care products; laundry detergents, stain removers and fabric softeners; industrial settings, for example in textile spin-finish solutions, leather processing solutions, preservation of fresh animal hides and skins agriculture in pesticide formulations gas and oil drilling in muds and packer fluids preservation.[2]:iv In paints, it is commonly used alone or as a mixture with methylisothiazolinone. Typical concentrations in products are 200-400 ppm depending on the application area and the combination with other biocides. According to a study in Switzerland, 19% of the paints, varnishes and coatings contained BIT in 2000. The fraction in adhesives, sealants, plasters and fillers was shown at that time as 25%.[3] A later study in 2014 shows a dramatic rise in usage, to 95.8% of house paints.[4]
Benzo[d]isothiazol-3-one is an organic heterobicyclic compound based on a fused 1,2-thiazole and benzene bicyclic ring skeleton, with the S atom positioned adjacent to one of the positions of ring fusion. It has a role as a disinfectant, a platelet aggregation inhibitor, an environmental contaminant, a xenobiotic, a drug allergen and a sensitiser. It is an organonitrogen heterocyclic compound and an organic heterobicyclic compound.

Function and uses
Benzisothiazolinone is listed in the EU Cosmetics Inventory, Section 1 with indicated function "antimicrobial". It is currently not regulated in the annexes of the Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC. The submitted dossier requests a maximum level of 100 ppm as preservative in cosmetic products. This is greater than the level proposed in the earlier submission, which the applicant justifies with the availability of more recent studies, demonstration of a greater margin of safety. Aside from its use in cosmetic products, there are also other uses: Under the Biocide review programme for existing substances (Commission Regulation (EC) No 1451/2007), Benzisothiazolinone is examined for use in the following product types: SCCS/1482/12 Opinion on benzisothiazolinone
Private area and public health area disinfectants and other biocidal products (2), In-can preservatives (6), Film preservatives (7), Fibre, leather, rubber and polymerised materials preservatives (9), Masonry preservatives (10), Preservatives for liquid-cooling and processing systems (11), Slimicides (12), Metalworking-fluid preservatives (13), Embalming and taxidermist fluids (22). Benzisothiazolinone is used as a slimicide in the manufacture of disposable powder-free polyvinyl chloride gloves. Benzisothiazolinone is widely used in industry as a preservative in water-based solutions such as pastes, paints and cutting oils.

General
BIT-20 biocide is a broad spectrum microbicide for the preservation of industrial water-based products against the attack of microorganisms. The Composition of BIT-20 is 20% solution of 1,2-Benzisothiazolin-3-one in dipropylene glycol and water.
BIT-20 is specifically recommended for the preservation of polymer emulsions, paints and coatings, adhesives, and printing inks.
Application field
Suitable for applications in the water-based polymer, leather, paint, textile, printing and dyeing, metal cutting fluids, adhesives, inks, dyes, dye dispersions industries to resist corrosion.
Performance characteristics
1. Serve as a broad-spectrum, long-lasting biocide to kill many bacteria, fungi and yeasts; the liquid with a lowest concentration of 0.1% will have a good antibacterial effect;
2. Good compatibility with all kinds of emulsifiers, surfactants and other agents; miscible in the solutions of alcohol and water at any ratio.
3. Wider applications that like products; suitable for use in the medium of the pH value in the range of 4.0-12.
4. Excellent inactivity, with the active ingredient able to withstand a high temperature of 150 ℃.
5. Low toxicity; contain no heavy metals and halogen compounds; inactive to amines; free of formaldehyde.
Usage and Cautions
1. For use in cosmetics, body care products, and other daily chemicals, the concentration of using is in the range of 0.05-0.40% (w/w) depending on the storage environment and whether the product is susceptible to the destroy of microorganisms. The specific formula and instructions for the concentration of using will be based on the company's microbial technology division
2. It can be added at any production step; but it's suggested to be added at the final step at less than 50 ℃; avoid adding at a temperature of higher than 50 ℃.

Product Description
Benzisothiazolinone (BIT) is a widely used biocide and belongs to the group of isothiazolinones.
Benzisothiazolinone has a microbicide and a fungicide mode of action. It is widely used as a preservative, for example in:
-Emulsion paints, caulks, varnishes, adhesives, inks, and photographic processing solutions;-Home cleaning and car care products; laundry detergents, stain removers and fabric softeners;-Industrial settings, for example in textile spin-finish solutions, leather processing solutions, preservation of fresh animal hides and skins;-Agriculture in pesticide formulations;-Gas and oil drilling in muds and packer fluids preservation.
Health hazards
Given sufficient dose and duration, dermal exposure can produce skin sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis,[5] and is classified as an irritant for skin and eyes.[1] Benzisothiazolinone has also been linked with Systemic Contact Dermatitis via airborne contact.[6] In 2012, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety in Europe found BIT's "sensitising potential is of concern...Sensitisation from related isothiazolinones is an important problem in consumers. This has occurred because there has been consumer exposure before safe levels of exposure relevant to sensitisation have been established. Benzisothiazolinone is a skin sensitiser in animal models with potency similar to methylisothiazolinone. Methylisothiazolinone, at 100 ppm (0.01%) in cosmetic products is causing contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis in the consumer. Benzisothiazolinone is known to be a sensitiser in man and has induced sensitisation at circa 20 ppm in gloves."[7] The opinion further states: "There is no information on what may be safe levels of exposure to benzisothiazolinone in cosmetic products from the point of view of sensitisation. Until safe levels of exposure have been established, the use of benzisothiazolinone in cosmetic products as a preservative or for other functions cannot be considered safe in relation to sensitisation." Later, in 2013, researchers published a study that set out to derive the highest concentration of BIT in certain consumer products that would result in exposures below the No Expected Sensitization Induction Level (NESIL); that is, where normal use would yield a dose below the level at which skin sensitization might occur. The products under consideration were sunscreen, laundry detergent, dish soap, and spray cleaner; by way of calculation they derived BIT NESILs of 0.0075%, 0.035%, 0.035%, 0.021%, respectively. They then performed a pilot examination via bulk sample analysis of one representative product from each category labelled as containing BIT. Their findings showed all BIT concentrations well below the derived NESIL, with 0.0009% and 0.0027% for sunscreen and dish soap, respectively, and no detection in the laundry detergent and spray cleaner products, meaning the concentration was at or below the limit of detection of 0.0006%.[8]
