Tereftalik Asit (terephthalic acid, TPA)

Amoco (Standard Oil of Indiana) Mid-Century / ICI teknolojisini satın aldı. [4]
Tereftalik Asit (terephthalic acid, TPA) sentezi
Dünya çapında yaygın olarak benimsenen Amoco sürecinde, Tereftalik Asit (terephthalic acid, TPA), p-ksilenin katalitik oksidasyonu ile üretilir: [4]
Tereftalik Asit (terephthalic acid, TPA)
P-ksilenin tereftalik aside oksidasyonu
Zorluklar

Tereftalik Asit (terephthalic acid, TPA)

Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)

Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is an organic compound with formula C6H4(CO2H)2. This white solid is a commodity chemical, used principally as a precursor to the polyester PET, used to make clothing and plastic bottles. Several million tonnes are produced annually.[2] The common name is derived from the turpentine-producing tree Pistacia terebinthus and phthalic acid.
History of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) was first isolated (from turpentine) by the French chemist Amédée Cailliot (1805-1884) in 1846.[3] Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) became industrially important after World War II. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) was produced by oxidation of p-xylene with dilute nitric acid. Air oxidation of p-xylene gives p-toluic acid, which resists further air-oxidation. Conversion of p-toluic acid to methyl p-toluate (CH3C6H4CO2CH3) opens the way for further oxidation to monomethyl terephthalate, which is further esterified to dimethyl terephthalate. In 1955, Mid-Century Corporation and ICI announced the bromide-promoted oxidation of p-toluic acid to teraphthalic acid. This innovation enabled the conversion of p-xylene to Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) without the need to isolate intermediates. Amoco (as Standard Oil of Indiana) purchased the Mid-Century/ICI technology.[4]
Synthesis of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
In the Amoco process, which is widely adopted worldwide, Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is produced by catalytic oxidation of p-xylene:[4]
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
The process uses a cobalt-manganese-bromide catalyst. The bromide source can be sodium bromide, hydrogen bromide or tetrabromoethane. Bromine functions as a regenerative source of free radicals. Acetic acid is the solvent and compressed air serves as the oxidant. The combination of bromine and acetic acid is highly corrosive, requiring specialized reactors, such as those lined with titanium. A mixture of p-xylene, acetic acid, the catalyst system, and compressed air is fed to a reactor.
Mechanism of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
The oxidation of p-xylene proceed by a free radical process. Bromine radicals decompose cobalt and manganese hydroperoxides. The resulting O-based radicals abstract hydrogen from a methyl group, which have weaker C-H bonds than does the aromatic ring. Many intermediates have been isolated. p-xylene is converted to p-toluic acid, which is less reactive than the p-xylene owing to the influence of the electron-withdrawing carboxylic acid group. Incomplete oxidation produces 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (4-CBA), which is often a problematic impurity.[4][5] [6]
Oxidation of p-xylene to Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
Challenges
Approximately 5% of the acetic acid solvent is lost by decomposition or "burning". Product loss by decarboxylation to benzoic acid is common. The high temperature diminishes oxygen solubility in an already oxygen-starved system. Pure oxygen cannot be used in the traditional system due to hazards of flammable organic-O2 mixtures. Atmospheric air can be used in its place, but once reacted needs to be purified of toxins and ozone depleters such as methylbromide before being released. Additionally, the corrosive nature of bromides at high temperatures requires the reaction be run in expensive titanium reactors.[7] [8]
Alternative reaction media of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
The use of carbon dioxide overcomes many of the problems with the original industrial process. Because CO2 is a better flame inhibitor than N2, a CO2 environment allows for the use of pure oxygen directly, instead of air, with reduced flammability hazards. The solubility of molecular oxygen in solution is also enhanced in the CO2 environment. Because more oxygen is available to the system, supercritical carbon dioxide (Tc = 31 °C) has more complete oxidation with fewer byproducts, lower carbon monoxide production, less decarboxylation and higher purity than the commercial process.[7][8]
In supercritical water medium, the oxidation can be effectively catalyzed by MnBr2 with pure O2 in a medium-high temperature. Use of supercritical water instead of acetic acid as a solvent diminishes environmental impact and offers a cost advantage. However, the scope of such reaction systems is limited by the even harsher conditions than the industrial process (300-400 °C, >200 bar).[9]
Promotors and additives
As with any large-scale process, many additives have been investigated for potential beneficial effects. Promising results have been reported with the following.[4]
Ketones act as promoters for formation of the active cobalt(III) catalyst. In particular, ketones with a-methylene groups oxidize to hydroperoxides that are known to oxidize cobalt(II). Butanone is often used.
Zirconium salts enhance the activity of Co-Mn-Br catalysts. Selectivity is also improved.[4]
N-Hydroxyphthalimide is a potential replacement for bromide, which is highly corrosive. The phthalimide functions by formation of the oxyl radical.
Guanidine inhibits the oxidation of the first methyl but enhances the usually slow oxidation of the toluic acid.
Alternative routes
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) can be prepared in the laboratory by oxidizing many para-disubstituted derivatives of benzene, including caraway oil or a mixture of cymene and cuminol with chromic acid.
Although not commercially significant is the so-called "Henkel process" or "Raecke process", named after the company and patent holder, respectively. This process involves the transfer of carboxylate groups. For example potassium benzoate disproportionates to potassium terephthalate and potassium phthalate rearranges to potassium terephthalate.[10][11]
Lummus (now a subsidiary of McDermott International) has reported a route from the dinitrile, which can be obtained by ammoxidation of p-xylene.
Applications of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
Virtually the entire world's supply of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) and dimethyl terephthalate are consumed as precursors to polyethylene terephthalate (PET). World production in 1970 was around 1.75 million tonnes.[2] By 2006, global purified Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) (PTA) demand had exceeded 30 million tonnes. A smaller, but nevertheless significant, demand for Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) exists in the production of polybutylene terephthalate and several other engineering polymers.[12]

Other uses of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
Polyester fibers based on PTA provide easy fabric care, both alone and in blends with natural and other synthetic fibers. Polyester films are used widely in audio and video recording tapes, data storage tapes, photographic films, labels and other sheet material requiring both dimensional stability and toughness.
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is used in paint as a carrier.
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is used as a raw material to make terephthalate plasticizers such as dioctyl terephthalate and dibutyl terephthalate.
It is used in the pharmaceutical industry as a raw material for certain drugs.
In addition to these end uses, Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) based polyesters and polyamides are also used in hot melt adhesives.
PTA is an important raw material for lower molecular weight saturated polyesters for powder and water-soluble coatings.
In the research laboratory, Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) has been popularized as a component for the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks.
The analgesic drug oxycodone occasionally comes as a terephthalate salt; however, the more usual salt of oxycodone is the hydrochloride. Pharmacologically, one milligram of terephthalas oxycodonae is equivalent to 1.13 mg of hydrochloridum oxycodonae.
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is used as a filler in some military smoke grenades, most notably the American M83 smoke grenade and M90 vehicle-employed smoke grenade, producing a thick white smoke that acts as an obscurant in the visual and near-infrared spectrum when burned.
Solubility of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is poorly soluble in water and alcohols; consequently, until about 1970 Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) was purified as its dimethyl ester. It sublimes when heated.
Toxicity of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) and its dimethyl ester have very low toxicity, with LD50s over 1 g/kg (oral, mouse).

Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is a known environmental transformation product of Iprovalicarb. The concentrations of urine Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) in rats after single oral administration in dose of 100 mg/kg bw were determined by high pressure liquid chromatography. ... The results showed that the first-order kinetics and two-compartment model were noted on the elimination of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit). ... The excretion rates of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) in urine were about 50%, 52% and 53% in 0-24 hr, 0-48 hr and 0-72 hr respectively after administration. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is well absorbed when given orally and rapidly eliminated via urine. Urine Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) at the end of work shift should be considered as a biomarker of exposure for the occupational workers.
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is excreted in the urine apparently unchanged. Dermal or ocular absorption is negligible. The pharmacokinetics of (14)C Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) were determined in Fischer-344 rats after iv and oral administration. After iv injection, the plasma concentration-time data were fitted with a three-compartment pharmacokinetic model. The average terminal half-life in 3 rats was 1.2 + or - 0.4 hr, and the average volume of distribution in the terminal phase was 1.3 + or - 0.3 l/kg. Following administration by gavage, a longer terminal half-life was obtained, indicating that dissolution of (14)C Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) or absorption from the gut may have been partially rate limiting. Recovery of (14)C Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) in the urine following a bolus iv dose was 101 + or - 8%, indicating essentially complete urinary excretion of the compound. No evidence of metabolism of (14)C Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) was obtained by analysis of urine by high-performance liquid chromatography. (14)C Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) was transported to the fetus after administration of the compound to pregnant rats; the concentrations in fetal tissues were low relative to the corresponding maternal tissues. Neonatal rats exposed to 5% Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) in the diet of their dams did not develop calculi until the onset of self-feeding. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) was rapidly excreted into urine after administration to rats, and excretory mechanisms in the dam provided an effective mechanism of defense against Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) -induced urolithiasis in neonatal rats.
By use of the Sperber in vivo chicken preparation method, infusion of radiolabeled Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) ([14C]Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) ) into the renal portal circulation revealed a first-pass excretion of the unchanged compound into the urine. This model was utilized further to characterize the excretory transport of [14C]Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) and provide information on the structural specificity in the secretion of dicarboxylic acids. At an infusion rate of 0.4 nmol/min. 60% of the [14C]Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) which reached the kidney was directly excreted. An infusion rate of 3 or 6 mumol/min resulted in complete removal of [14C]Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) by the kidney. These results indicate that Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is both actively secreted and actively reabsorbed when infused at 0.4 nmol/min and that active reabsorption is saturated with the infusion of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) at higher concentrations. The secretory process was saturated with the infusion of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) at 40 mumol/mn. The excretory transport of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) was inhibited by the infusion of probenecid, salicylate, and m-hydroxybenzoic acid, indicating that these organic acids share the same organic anion excretory transport process. m-Hydroxybenzoic acid did not alter the simultaneously measured excretory transport of p-aminohippuric acid (PAH), suggesting that there are different systems involved in the secretion of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) and PAH. The structural specificity for renal secretion of dicarboxylic acids was revealed by the use of o-phthalic acid and m-phthalic acid as possible inhibitors of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) secretion. m-Phthalate, but not o-phthalate, inhibited Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) excretory transport, indicating that there is some specificity in the renal secretion of carboxy-substituted benzoic acids. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) was actively accumulated by rat and human cadaver renal cortical slices.
A Rhodococcus species was isolated from soil by enriching for growth with dimethyl terephthalate as the sole carbon source. The organism degraded dimethyl terephthalate by hydrolysis of ester-bonds to free Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) which in turn was metabolized through protocatechuate by an ortho-cleavage pathway. C-Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) has a short elimination half-life (approximately 60-100 minutes) in the plasma; however, the apparent half-life was longer following administration by gavage.
The aim of this study was/ to investgate the metabolism of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) in rats and its mechanism. Metabolism was evaluated by incubating sodium terephthalate with rat normal liver microsomes, or with microsomes pretreated by phenobarbital sodium, or with 3-methycholanthrene, or with diet control following a NADPH-generating system.
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit), also known as terephthalate or TPA, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as p-phthalic acid and derivatives. P-phthalic acid and derivatives are compounds containing a benzene ring bearing a carboxylic acid group at ring carbon atoms 1 and 4. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) exists as a solid, slightly soluble (in water), and a weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) has been detected in multiple biofluids, such as saliva, urine, and blood. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is also a parent compound for other transformation products, including but not limited to, 4-[(2-hydroxyethoxy)carbonyl]benzoic acid, 4-carbamoylbenzoic acid, and tamibarotene.Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is an intermediate in the production of oligomeric Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) esters.
Reacting carbon monoxide or methanol with toluene to form various intermediates which, upon oxidation, form Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit).
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is a carboxylic acid. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) donates hydrogen ions if a base is present to accept them. This "neutralization" generates substantial amounts of heat and produces water plus a salt. Insoluble in water but even "insoluble" carboxylic acids may absorb enough water from the air and dissolve sufficiently in it to corrode or dissolve iron, steel, and aluminum parts and containers. May react with cyanide salts to generate gaseous hydrogen cyanide. Will react with solutions of cyanides to cause the release of gaseous hydrogen cyanide. Flammable and/or toxic gases and heat are generated by reaction with diazo compounds, dithiocarbamates, isocyanates, mercaptans, nitrides, and sulfides. React with sulfites, nitrites, thiosulfates (to give H2S and SO3), dithionites (SO2), to generate flammable and/or toxic gases and heat. Reaction with carbonates and bicarbonates generates a harmless gas (carbon dioxide) but still heat. Can be oxidized by strong oxidizing agents and reduced by strong reducing agents. These reactions generate heat. May initiate polymerization reactions; may catalyze (increase the rate of) chemical reactions.
Chlorothiacide or dietary bicarbonate abolished Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)-induced urolithiasis in /male weanling Fisher 344 rats fed 4.0% Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) in diet for 2 weeks (postnatal days 28-42)/. (14)C-labeled Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) may be both secreted and reabsorbed by the nephron, and when infused at 3 or 6 umol/min its excretion efficiency is comparable to that of p-aminohippuric acid and tetraethylammonium. Probenecid significantly inhibited the excretion of (14)C-labeled Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit). M-Hydroxybenzoic acid significantly decreased the excretion of (14)C-labeled Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) but was without any significant effect on the excretion of p-aminohippuric acid.
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)'s production and use to produce saturated polyesters may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is released to the environment in particulate emissions from motor vehicles, industrial-scale boilers and burning of refuse. It can also be formed in the atmosphere through photooxidation of other organic compounds during long range transport and formed in soils as a biodegradation metabolite. If released to air, an extrapolated vapor pressure of 6X10-11 mm Hg at 25 °C indicates Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) will exist solely in the particulate phase in the atmosphere. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) absorbs UV light at wavelengths >290 nm, and therefore may be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight. If released to soil, Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is expected to have high mobility based upon an estimated Koc of 79. The pKa1 and pKa2 of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) are 3.54 and 4.46 at 25 °C, respectively, indicating that this compound will partially exist in anion form in the environment and anions generally do not adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 3.9X10-13 atm-cu m/mole. If released into water, Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment based upon the estimated Koc. Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process based upon this compound's estimated Henry's Law constant. An estimated BCF of 3 suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low. Hydrolysis is not expected to be an important environmental fate process since this compound lacks functional groups that hydrolyze under environmental conditions. Occupational exposure to Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) may occur through dermal contact with this compound at workplaces where Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is produced or used. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) can combine with dust to form clouds, therefore, workers handling the compound may be exposed through inhalation. The detection of Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) in ambient atmospheric particulate matter indicates the general population may be exposed through inhalation of atmospheric particulates. Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit)
Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is the key monomer for the synthesis of polyester along with ethylene glycol (EG) for the production of PET. Currently, Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is produced by the catalytic oxidation of petrochemical p-xylene; however, three methods are available for the synthesis of bio-based p-xylene: (1) pyrolysis of biomass; (2) yeast fermentation of sugars into isobutanol; and (3) chemical conversion of carbohydrates (Collias et al., 2014). One method to produce bio-based Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit) is the cyclo-addition of isoprene and acrylic acid. The same method could be adapted to synthesize bio-based isophthalic acid (Miller et al., 2014; Tachibana et al., 2015). Fig. 8.6 shows the most important routes for the production of bio-based Terephthalic Acid (TEREPHTHALIC ACID, Tereftalik Asit).
